Create a shared folder on a Windows computer
- Log in as an administrator on the Windows computer on which the shared folder will be created.
- Click on the Windows Start button in the lower left corner of the Windows desktop.
- Type file explorer and Windows will automatically begin searching your hard drive.
- In the search results, click on the File Explorer app.
- In File Explorer, create the folder you'd like to share.
Note:
Avoid spaces and punctuation in the folder name. For example, SharedFolder is recommended while Shared Folder is not.
- Right-click on the new folder and select Properties in the resulting pop-up menu.
- In the Properties dialog box, click on the Sharing tab.
- In the Network File and Folder Sharing frame, click on the Share... button.
- In the Network access dialog box, type in the email address of the first person with whom you would like to share and press the Enter key. Alternatively, you can type the word everyone and press Enter if you'd like to make the folder public.
- Type in the email address for each additional person with whom you would like to share and press Enter.
- When the list is complete, look in the Permission Level column and you will see that the default permission for each user is Read. To allow additional access on a user by user basis, click on the word Read in the appropriate row and select Read/Write from the dropdown list box.
- When permissions are complete, click on the Share button.
- When you see the Your folder is shared message, note the specific network name for the shared folder. You will need this name to access the folder from another computer. An example is provided below:
\\W18004\SharedFolder
- Click on the Done button.
