Summer 2023
NYC Public Schools Summer 2023 programming will provide students across the city with the opportunity to engage with peers, caring adults, and their community in a wide range of experiences this summer.
For students in kindergarten through grade 8, Summer Rising will spark curiosity, joy, and a love of learning for approximately 110,000 K-8 students. Summer Rising is free and available to all NYC students in grades K-8, pending seat availability. Students will engage with peers and caring adults to experience all that our city has to offer. We will continue to combine academic support and school-based enrichment programming led by community-based organizations (CBOs), and students will have daily opportunities to play, create, explore, and develop new interests. Summer Rising 2023 is a partnership between New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
For high school students, Summer 2023 will include the opportunity to re-take courses needed for graduation and participate in academic, enrichment, and career preparatory supports designed locally and/or run through citywide programs such as the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). High schools will have the flexibility to design schedules that meet the needs of their school communities. High school programs for credit may be in-person or remote, based on program area and community need, in alignment with relevant academic policies. A typical Summer 2023 day for a high school student may include re-taking courses needed for graduation and participating in summer work opportunities.
The High School Summer 2023 experience will also emphasize college and career pathways, providing a record 100,000 summer opportunities for high school students, both through DYCD’s Summer Youth Employment Program as well as NYC Public Schools programs, including College Now, CareerReady SYEP, Industry Scholars Program (for CTE, FutureReadyNYC and Career Ready Modern Youth Apprenticeship Schools) and CTE Summer Design Institute.
Some students with disabilities may require additional supports to participate in Summer programs at their high school. Supports, such as a paraprofessional, will be provided as needed for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans.
For pre-K students, children in NYCPS 3-K and Pre-K programs who have an IEP that recommends an extended school year (12-month) special class program will participate in a summer program at an Extended School Year (ESY) or District 75 site.
